Wh- questions

Another way to stimulate speech and language is to ask wh- questions (who, what, when, where and why).  Some examples include:

Who is the park in honor of?

What was your favorite part of the park?

When does the park close?



Where does the path lead?

Why are the leaves changing color?

This activity can be done any time, but it is particularly useful at the end of the trip to review what the child has seen, to revisit targets, etc.

Wh- questions can also be used to gauge a child's understanding of language.  For example, you may have the child note the difference between "when" and "where."
